Foreign gadget bans: all the news about the FCC’s clampdown on Chinese tech

What do drones, routers, and Roombas have in common? The US government wants to keep Chinese ones from entering the country. They’re the first consumer gadgets that are facing de facto import bans because of the US government’s xenophobic stance — and they might not be the last.

Originally, the US government was just worried about US networks. It’s been distrustful of Chinese telecom equipment providers Huawei and ZTE for well over a decade, eventually requiring telecom providers to “rip and replace” their gear. (Many telecoms have still failed to do so.) It established an “Entity List” for companies whose gear should be banned from import, marketing, and sale.

But under the second Trump administration, that list has been weaponized against entire home consumer gadget categories too — starting in December 2025 when Trump and Brendan Carr’s FCC banned all future foreign drones unless their companies obtained a waiver.

Next was a ban on all future foreign routers, all future foreign robots and power inverters, and within the robot ban, all future foreign robovacs. In each case, the government claims it’s because those gadgets fundamentally pose an unacceptable threat to US national security. But in each case, the US has provided zero public evidence of a threat, has done nothing about existing drones and routers and robots that might pose such a threat, and hasn’t given us any reason to trust that its waivers have anything to do with security.

Besides, there are rarely any US companies to fill the gaps left by foreign ones. Consumer gadgets are largely made overseas, including practically all routers and practically all drones — just like how your Apple, Dell, and HP laptops are not made in the US.

In this StoryStream, we’re following the latest on the foreign gadget bans.

Hands-on with the new OLED iPad Mini

Apple announced a new iPad Mini with a larger OLED display this week, and we've just gotten to try it out at Apple's "Pro and tell" event.

It's an iPad for sure, but the new OLED on the Mini looks exceptional, and the optional nano-texture matte finish is awesome. The "Pro and tell" event venue has soft lighting that's not the most conducive to blinding glare on displays, but the matte finish pretty much squashes it entirely.

Moving the front-facing camera to the long edge is also a welcome change, matching other recent iPad models. (The shift means that the whole iPad line has the camera that way.) The reliance on Touch ID instead of Face …

Brendan Carr plans to let prisons jam cellphone signals

28 October 2026 at 19:57
The FCC seal.

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr announced the agency will vote on November 19th on rules that would allow prisons to use signal jamming. Radiofrequency jammers are generally banned under Section 333 and the Communications Act of 1934, with few exceptions, and Carr has noted they've been permitted for use at some federal facilities already. Carr claims in a statement that jammers are needed because "For years, thousands upon thousands of contraband cellphones have been pouring into prisons, and some of the worst possible offenders have been using them to order hits, coordinate violent gang activity, and aid criminal enterprises."

When the FCC appr …

Microsoft is ending Copilot support on smart TVs

28 October 2026 at 19:36
Microsoft’s Copilot AI assistant shown running on a Samsung smart TV.

Nearly two years after LG and Samsung announced at CES 2025 that their latest smart TVs would include access to Microsoft's Copilot, the company is ending support for the AI assistant's functionality on all TVs this year, according to a report by Windows Central.

The news comes not from an official announcement from LG, Samsung, or Microsoft, but from an on-screen notification that appeared on Windows Central's Zac Bowden's webOS-powered LG TV earlier today. "Microsoft has recently decided to end support for Copilot functionality on all TVs, including the Copilot-enabled feature available on our LG TVs. As a result, the Copilot-enabled feat …

Surprise: The Google Xreal glasses debut at a Meta-beating $1,099

28 October 2026 at 19:14

In this economy, how often does a product get less expensive before its debut? That just happened with the Google / Xreal Aura, the lightweight 95-gram glasses with a tethered Android XR compute puck and multiple virtual screens that just went on sale today. Xreal and Google have just announced the headset costs $1,099 through the end of the year, down from the $1,279 that Xreal was charging for early preorders last month.

I expect that's because at $1,279, they were going head to head with Meta's VR Glasses, and that's tough competition for Google and Xreal's new product. The Xreal Aura has one of the widest fields of view for transparent …

Here’s where to preorder the new MacBook Pros

28 October 2026 at 19:10
A person is seated at a table in front of an opened MacBook laptop while working alongside a colleague.

As expected, Apple finally showed off its 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros at its recent "Pro and tell" event. The long-awaited laptops feature a Tandem OLED display with full touch capabilities, while also cutting some weight and bringing back the glowing Apple logo. While less exciting, there's also an updated 14-inch MacBook Pro that features Apple's M6 chip, along with improved wireless connectivity. It's a small, somewhat iterative update of the prior generation, with no substantial new features beyond performance gains.

Alongside the MacBook updates, Apple also announced an M6-equipped iMac that starts at $1,499, with the same color varia …

Here’s how macOS is changing for touchscreens

28 October 2026 at 18:48
A person stands in front of the new MacBook Pro and reaches out to touch an image shown on the laptop’s screen.
Reach out and touch screen.

Touchscreen laptops are nothing new in the Windows world, but Apple has only just announced its first MacBook with a touchscreen. Apple isn't rushing to change a bunch of things in macOS to optimize for touch, though: Most of the touch action will be in the apps themselves, it seems.

As far as major macOS changes go, iOS's Dynamic Island will debut on the new MacBook Pro, and Apple touts the added touch controls as particularly useful for interacting with the interface to accept AirDrops and pause music playback.

Otherwise, Apple gives some pretty predictable ways that the touch input will work with the new MacBook Pro. Gestures you coul …

Apple closed out its week of product announcements with its "Pro and tell" event on Wednesday, where it took the wraps off its long-rumored touchscreen MacBook Pro. We've rounded them all up here.

A MacBook Pro with a touchscreen

Apple CEO John Ternus revealed the company's first MacBook Pro with a touchscreen, allowing you to perform gestures on your screen like scrolling, swiping, and pinching. The company says the touch sensor is "built directly into the display panel," …

It's hard to make an Xbox controller that stands out these days, especially one that's expensive, due to a wealth of great semi-affordable options. Still, 8BitDo's $150 Ultimate 3E is a bold controller that holds its own against other feature-packed options. It's made for Xbox and PC gamers who want a deeper level of customization and a more refined design than Microsoft's pricier Xbox Elite Series 2 and 8BitDo's own $60 Ultimate 2.

Basically every feature I'm looking for in a controller is here, plus some, including drift-proof TMR joysticks, extra shoulder buttons, rear paddles, motion control support, modular buttons and joysticks, a 3.5 …

Apple raises the MacBook Neo’s student pricing again

28 October 2026 at 15:47

The MacBook Neo now starts at $649 on Apple's Education Store, up $150 from its initial $499 education starting price. As reported earlier by MacRumors, the student discount for the Neo received a $50 price bump in recent days, following a $100 price bump back in June.

Apple's budget MacBook is now just $50 off its regular $699 starting price for students, rather than the usual $100 discount. The now-$649 starting configuration includes 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM, and doesn't include Touch ID.

The MacBook Neo's starting price was its biggest selling point when it launched in March, but that perk has been steadily eroding, largely du …

A subsidiary of Elon Musk's xAI is offering to buy up homes in a Mississippi neighborhood, as long as residents don't join a lawsuit targeting the company's nearby data center and power plant, according to a report from The Guardian. A realtor going door-to-door in the Southaven neighborhood reportedly told one resident that xAI plans to purchase 418 homes, adding that 18 homeowners already have plans to sell. People who rent homes in the area report they're already being forced out, with 60 days' notice after their landlords agreed to sell.

A recent report from the Mississippi Free Press includes a letter received by several households rec …

This is how badly X wants you to pay to promote your posts

28 October 2026 at 14:26
A screenshot of the X compose window with a large pointing arm superimposed over it.

After Elon Musk warned that "advertisers who post ads that are ugly, shrill, strident or overstate claims about their product will be barred from advertising" on X earlier this month, the platform now appears to be using a jarring animated arm that reaches across the screen to draw attention to the "promote" button while users are composing a post.

Many X users have seen and shared images of the unsettling promotional tool, including The Verge's Tom Warren, but it doesn't appear for everyone on the platform. The arm seems limited to verified users, or those with a paid subscription to X Premium. Reactions, unsurprisingly, have been less tha …

TikTok is going after Yelp and Google Maps with an in-app restaurant guide

28 October 2026 at 14:00
TikTok’s Must Eat feature, with restaurant reviews and maps of local favorites.

TikTok is launching an in-app restaurant guide in a challenge to other platforms like Yelp and even Google Maps.

The company on Wednesday announced the launch of Must Eat, a new section of the TikTok app built on 40 million posts, reviews, and comments about dining on the platform. The new feature uses videos and discussions of buzzy local businesses to create restaurant recommendation guides. Users can leave reviews of restaurants, call and make reservations, and search for nearby businesses on a map.

At a launch event this week, TikTok US CEO Adam Presser called Must Eat "the compilation of all of the conversation that's happening on the …

Amazon swapped its usual big fall hardware showcase this year for a series of smaller launches throughout October. So far this month, it has announced new Fire TV devices, new Kindles, the Alexa Tablet Pro 12, Ring's first smart lock, new hardware from AI-wearable startup Bee, and new Blink 4K cameras.

Then this week, it hosted journalists at a small event in New York City's financial district to showcase its new Echo hardware.

Panos Panay, senior vice president of devices, Alexa, and Leo at Amazon, kicked off proceedings by explaining the company's approach this year. "We have so many products we're launching that are meaningful," he sa …

Almost all of Amazon’s new Echo gear is available now

28 October 2026 at 13:29

Amazon used to blast out dozens of products onstage at annual hardware events. If this October is any indication, the company has wisely changed its strategy to put more focus on each new product with its own launch. The latest round of launches focuses on Echo products, including speakers, smart displays, as well as a smart photo frame.

All products, save for the new Echo Show 16 (which might be the most interesting of the bunch), are available to buy today. This includes the Echo Dot, the Echo Studio with Home Camera, the Echo Time, and the Alexa Photo Frame. The Show 16 isn't launching until December 16th, though you can preorder it now …

Meta considered a ‘whisper strategy’ to turn academics against Jonathan Haidt

28 October 2026 at 12:30
Mark Zuckerberg wearing sunglasses leaving a court house in a black SUV.

As Meta was feeling public pressure over teen mental health, and facing an impending onslaught of kids safety trials, the company considered a campaign to discredit a key critic: social psychologist Jonathan Haidt.

Newly filed court documents show that in March 2023, Meta discussed a "Whisper strategy" to "turn academics against Haidt," a thought leader who blamed social media for rising adolescent depression and anxiety. Haidt hadn't yet published his bestselling book, The Anxious Generation, but he testified about his conclusions before Congress in 2022, and in February 2023, he began posting more of his theories and research to Substack. …

Meta quietly launched an ‘AI pet journal’ app

28 October 2026 at 12:27
A screenshot taken of the Waddle World app from Apple’s App store.

Meta has launched a "tamagotchi-style" pet game called Waddle World, with virtual creatures that chat with users and create doodles to illustrate conversations.

According to its Apple and Play Store listings, the "16-bit pet care game" is not really a game, but "a daily journal disguised as a pet." Users should talk, not type, with their pets, the description says, as well as play "cozy games" like stacking groceries or word games. The Play store description says:

A little friend that listens. A cozy world that's yours. Waddle World is a cozy 16-bit world where your pixel pet lives. Hatch a virtual pet, visit whenever you like, and let it …

Here’s why the iPhone Duo’s hinge could be cracking the screen

27 October 2026 at 23:55

Within hours of the iPhone Duo launch last Friday, people reported that the inner screen on some brand new foldable phones was already broken. The issue was similar across many photos shared on social media: some kind of issue or crack would appear in the middle of the screen above the hinge, with lines appearing on the right side of the display. On Monday, Apple acknowledged an "issue" and said it's replacing damaged units, without going into much detail about how many broken phones have been reported so far.

So what's actually going on?

Shahram Mokhtari, the lead teardown technician at iFixit, has actually taken apart the iPhone Duo and …
