France, Germany try to save face on joint tank project

9 October 2026 at 14:42

PARIS — Defense ministers from France and Germany insisted their joint tank project is going well Friday, one day after the French chief of defense staff said it had faltered because of Berlin.

The Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) “remains a relevant project,” Armed Forces Minister Catherine Vautrin said, speaking near Bordeaux alongside her German counterpart Boris Pistorius.

“I can only wholeheartedly agree, dear Catherine. The MGCS project is not over, it is not dead, it has not been terminated by anyone,” Pistorius echoed. “Quite the contrary: It is a cornerstone project of Franco-German cooperation in land systems.”

France’s chief of defense staff, Gen. Fabien Mandon, told lawmakers Thursday that Germany had pulled out of the project. His comments landed especially awkwardly as German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is currently on a state visit to France.

Later in the evening, Mandon tried to backpedal in a written statement, arguing the project was only delayed to the late 2040s.

In recent years, Franco-German defense industrial projects have repeatedly failed. MGCS — which involves KNDS France, KNDS Germany, Rheinmetall and Thales — has been bogged down by years of delays, industrial disputes and political tensions. POLITICO reported in June that France and Germany would most likely build separate tanks.

Now, Pistorius has said the two countries will still work together on “unmanned systems and automated processing.”

The German minister pledged that the project wouldn’t meet the same fate as the Future Combat Air System, the joint next-generation fighter jet program that collapsed before the summer. “The crucial point is that we learn from our mistakes. That is why MGCS is in no way at risk and remains an important future project for our two nations and our two armed forces,” he said.

But the imbroglio highlights strains in the defense relationship between Paris and Berlin, and an increasing number of French lawmakers are now calling for Paris to look for other partners.

“Defense cooperation with Germany is at an all-time low, since Germany is going it alone,” a French lawmaker working on defense policy told POLITICO on condition of anonymity.

French top general acknowledges joint tank program with Germany has failed

8 October 2026 at 19:37

PARIS — France’s top general Fabien Mandon admitted on Thursday that the Franco-German next-generation battle tank project had failed.

It’s one of the first times a French official has publicly acknowledged that the plans have faltered, after months of speculation about the fate of the Main Combat Ground System.

“The outcome isn’t good. We had hoped to build a future tank in cooperation with the Germans, but unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the Germans have withdrawn from the project,” the French chief of defense staff told lawmakers during a hearing on next year’s budget.

MGCS — which involves KNDS France, KNDS Germany, Rheinmetall and Thales — has been bogged down by years of delays, industrial disputes and political tensions. POLITICO reported in June that the next-generation tank project was increasingly doomed.

Mandon’s admission comes only a few months after another high-stakes Franco-German defense industrial program — the Future Combat Air System — abruptly ended.

However, answering a question from a far-right National Rally lawmaker, the French general pushed back against the word “failure” to describe the MGCS’s fate.

“It’s not a complete failure; it’s an important decision by Germany, but our land forces have worked together for several years to determine what a future main battle tank should look like,” he said. “It wasn’t a waste of time. But from an industrial standpoint, this isn’t good news.”

A German defense official had no comment.
