How the Charles Manson Murders Changed Luke Skywalker’s Name in ‘Star Wars’

13 October 2026 at 03:21

Mark Hamill will forever be remembered for playing Luke Skywalker, the main protagonist from 1977’s Star Wars, but according to him, the character came very close to being known by another name. As Hamill revealed in a tweet from 2020, George Lucas actually had to reshoot the scene in which Luke rescues Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) because he’d originally introduced himself as Luke Starkiller:

May The 24 Be My Age When We Had To Reshoot The Imprisoned Princess Scene In #StarWars Because The First Time We Filmed It I Said: "I'm Luke Starkiller, I'm Here To Rescue You."#TrueStory pic.twitter.com/FVJiwxpONL

After HuffPost picked up the story and erroneously reported that Hamill botched the line, Hamill clarified that the scene was redone on account of Luke’s name getting changed at the last minute:

This article states we reshot the rescue of Leia scene because I "botched" my line. In fact, we had to redo it weeks later, because my name was changed to Skywalker AFTER we did it the 1st time (when my name was still Starkiller). #TrueFunFact https://t.co/ubcWztJs47

As for the reason Lucas made an adjustment like that so far into production, the director had previously addressed the issue himself in J.W. Rinzler’s The Making of Star Wars: The Definitive Story Behind the Original Film. “That I did because I thought a lot of people were confusing [Luke] with someone like Charles Manson,” said Lucas. “It had very unpleasant connotations.”

If you’re not clear on why Lucas would’ve felt that way, Manson was responsible for orchestrating the infamous Tate-LaBianca murders in 1969, which resulted in the deaths of seven people, including actress Sharon Tate. Then, less than a year before principal photography began on Star Wars, Manson Family member “Squeaky” Fromme was arrested for the attempted assassination of President Gerald Ford.

For his part, Hamill wasn’t thrilled with the name change initially, mainly due to the fact that Skywalker sounded a bit too close to “flyswatter.” “I was so used to Starkiller, which had a little macho in it, which I thought the character could use,” he explained.

Dungeons and Dragons Confirms Title, Timeline, and Setting for Two Upcoming Star Wars Books

9 October 2026 at 19:14

New York Comic-Con is now underway and Dungeons and Dragons is helping kick off the festivities by revealing new details about the upcoming Star Wars Universes Beyond gameplay expansion and adventure.

D&D Star WArs Core Rulebook and Tyro Squadron: Adventures Arrive in 2027

Dungeons and Dragons is kicking off its Universes Beyond line next month with the arrival of the World of Warcraft gameplay expansion, but some fans are already looking ahead to next year and what comes next.

When Universes Beyond for D&D was first announced, the team confirmed that Star Wars would be the next universe visited after Azeroth. The initial teaser didn’t provide any details, but now fans are finally getting a closer look at what in store for next year.

Two books, D&D | Star Wars Core Rules, and D&D | Star Wars, Tyro Squadron: Adventures are warping into the galaxy in 2027. Select artwork, including the cover of D&D | Star Wars, Tyro Squadron: Adventures, was also unveiled during the Disney / Lucasfilm publishing panel at New York Comic Con.

In D&D | Star Wars, Tyro Squadron: Adventures, take the fight to the Empire as part of a secret Rebel crew. Set during the Original Trilogy, these new stories unfold as Luke and Leia fight their own battles across the galaxy. Fly daring missions, explore new corners of the galaxy, and help shape the Rebellion’s story—your way.

Additional details about D&D | Star Wars, Core Rules will be revealed later, and fans can also look forward to a star fighter encounter at Star Wars Celebration in April 2027.

Given how in-depth the World of Warcraft gameplay expansion is, it will be very exciting to see how the traditional D&D classes and subclasses may be altered to set things up for adventures in the galaxy far, far away.

Obviously DMs will be able to set their campaigns at any point and location that they would like, but it’s exciting to learn that the official adventure book is focusing in on the original trilogy timeline.

Be sure to check back soon for lots more Dungeons and Dragons news and updates in the coming months.

Dungeons and Dragons is available now at local game shops and digitally through D&D Beyond, Roll20, and similar online services. The upcoming Universes Beyond Star Wars books will arrive in 2027.
